In 1999, Isabel Rubio founded the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, where she serves as Executive Director. HICA is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the social, civic, and economic integration of Hispanic families in Alabama. The organization offers four programs: Asset Building and Economic Development, Community Engagement and Education, Immigration and Access to Justice, and Strong Families. Rubio is a Mississippi native and third generation Mexican American. She has degrees in both History and Social Work.

Michele Kong, M.D. founded KultureCity after her son was diagnosed with autism and she recognized the lack of resources for families of children with autism. KultureCity aims to provide support to families impacted by autism and seeks to alter how public places react to patrons of autism. Kong is a graduate of University of Calgary. Following a residency at University of Mississippi Medical Center, she came to Birmingham in 2005 for a critical care fellowship. In addition to working with KultureCity, she is an associate professor in Pediatric Critical Care in the Department of Pediatrics and at Children’s of Alabama.

Ryan and Geri-Martha O’Hara are the husband and wife team behind Avondale’s newest business, Big Spoon Creamery. Their business initially began in the driveway of their Bluff Park home, with the couple scooping up original flavors for their neighbors. By 2015, the O’Hara’s quit their jobs to focus on Big Spoon Creamery. “We’ve been able to go from nothing, to a cart, to a truck, to a storefront, all in three years,” Geri-Martha says. “We’re very much grassroots.”

Nick Goudreau loves Birmingham, and he wants to share that love with others across the country. As a result, he founded Birmingham Box, a gift-giving service that features goods unique to the Birmingham-area. Since its founding in 2014, Birmingham Box has shipping packages across the U.S. and even to overseas military bases. “Birmingham is one of those cities that people have a heart for,” says Goudreau. “If they have to move away, they genuinely miss the one-of-a-kind things here.”

Will Wright is currently a consultant to companies working on improving healthcare outcomes and to start ups looking to grow. He is formerly the CEO of Pack Health, which he co-founded  in 2013. Under his leadership, Pack Health was one of the fastest growing companies in Birmingham and was named one of the best places to work in the city. In 2016, the Birmingham Business Journal referred to Wright as a “Rising Star in Healthcare”. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Harvard University and his Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley where he received the Haas Public Service and Leadership award.

Deidre Clark is the founder and president of Kuumba Community Arts, an Ensley-based graphic design academy for high school students. Kuumba, which means “creativity” in Swahili, gives students the opportunity to be introduced to a non-traditional career field and gives young artists a safe space to be themselves and create. Kristina Scott is the executive director of Alabama Possible, a statewide nonprofit organization that works to remove barriers to prosperity through advocacy, education, and collaboration. Kim West is a partner at the law firm Wallace, Jordan, Ratliff & Brandt, LLC, and teaches Shakespeare and Trial Advocacy at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. Steve Rygiel is the Director of the Aiding Alabama Legal Program at Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO), whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS. As the Director, Steve has provided pro bono legal services to over 600 individuals living with HIV-AIDS in Alabama in a five-year period. Fitzgerald Washington has served as Secretary of the Alabama Department of Labor since 2014. During his tenure, the Department has launched a statewide marketing campaign, initiated a new job fair initiative that brings available jobs to Alabamians, and has participated in a new alignment of workforce regions that allows for better distribution of state workforce resources.

Washington currently serves on the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) Board as the Region IV Alternate and is a member of the National Association of Government Labor Officials (NAGLO).
